What is STEAM Education?
STEAM education focuses on fostering creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration by incorporating Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (STEAM) into the curriculum. The arts (visual arts, graphic design, communication media) are an integral part of the learning process. The goal of STEAM education is to provide students with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in the 21st century workforce. STEAM education typically involves technology-driven projects that encourage students to think creatively and to solve complex problems.
FWJ STEAM Academy Vision
The FWJ STEAM Academy empowers the next generation of innovators, critical thinkers, and creators by blending scientific inquiry, technological advancement, engineering design, artistic expression, and mathematical reasoning. Our STEAM program encourages students to explore, experiment, and collaborate, enabling them to solve complex, real-world problems with creativity and confidence.
Graduates of the STEAM program will possess critical thinking, problem-solving, and creative skills and will be well-prepared for success in post-secondary or careers in a rapidly changing workforce. They will have gained practical experience with technology, engineering, and the arts, enabling them to approach challenges from multiple perspectives.
Program Overview
The FWJ STEAM Academy is a four-year high school program at F.W. Johnson Collegiate open to all Regina Public students. This program is an engaging, academically challenging, and interdisciplinary experience, that emphasizes the design process to develop innovative solutions for real-world problems presented by teachers.
STEAM students will work with an ever-expanding set of technologies, and processes such as robotics, 3D printers, CAD, virtual reality, drones, music, automation and more! There is no requirement to have skills in these technologies to apply but an interest in learning and engaging with them in a highly academic setting is a must.
STEAM Students
Students who thrive in the FWJ STEAM Academy are the ones who are engaged in the learning process and pose questions about the world around them. They are collaborative, curious, and enjoy working alongside others on practical and applied technological projects. They are creative and enjoy exploring the ways in which technology can be used to solve problems.
Post-Secondary Planning
During their four years at the FWJ STEAM Academy, students will have the opportunity to explore many possible STEAM related fields of study and, by grade 11, students will start to specialize their skills by choosing a STEAM Pathway. The experiences students gain in the STEAM academy will allow them to find success in a variety of avenues. Through interpersonal relationships with enthusiastic teachers and like-minded classmates, the program fosters critical thinking, teaching students to take on challenges with confidence, creativity, and a collaborative spirit.
