English Language Arts A10 & B10

Prerequisite:  Complete Grade 9

 

The program integrates the development of the six strands of communication: speaking, listening, reading, writing, viewing and representing. The objective of the curriculum is to develop effective communication and thinking skills through a variety of language activities.  Students learn that language varies according to audience, purpose, and situation; and that language has a variety of logical and structural patterns. Students read a variety of literature to develop an appreciation of the writer's craft as well as an aesthetic and critical response to literature. The study of literature is organized according to themes that deal with the adolescent and society. 

 

English Language Arts A10 & B10 - Enriched 

Prerequisite:  Complete Grade 9 and teacher recommendation

 

This program covers the outcomes of ELA A10 and B10 while preparing students to be successful in Grade 12 Advance Placement.   Students will work with increasingly complex texts in order to become stronger communicators. More information on the AP program is available here.

 

English Language Arts 20

Prerequisite:  English A10 & B10

 

This compulsory English Language Arts course integrates the development of the six strands of communication: speaking, listening, reading, writing, viewing and representing.  Effective communication and thinking skills are developed through a variety of language activities. Students study literature focused on self and society through two themes:  Starting Out and Moving Forward.

 

English Language Arts 20 & Communication Studies 20 - Enriched

Prerequisite:  Complete Grade 10 and teacher recommendation

 

This program covers the outcomes of ELA 20 and Communication Studies 20 while preparing students to be successful in Grade 12 Advance Placement.   Students will work with increasingly complex texts in order to become stronger communicators.  More information on the AP program is available here.

 

 

English Language Arts A30

Prerequisite:  English 20

The A30 course is organized around themes that focus on Canadian literature and society.  Assignments and activities are designed to continue development of skills in listening, speaking, representing, reading, and writing.   

 

English Language Arts B30

Prerequisite:  English A30

 

The B30 course is an issues-oriented course organized around human concerns in a global society. Students study both traditional and contemporary world literature in a comparative manner to explore themes from a global perspective.
