ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS COURSES 

 

ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS A10 & B10

Prerequisite:  Complete Grade 9

The program integrates the development of the six strands of communication: speaking, listening, reading, writing, viewing and representing. The objective of the curriculum is to develop effective communication and thinking skills through a variety of language activities.  Students learn that language varies according to audience, purpose, and situation; and that language has a variety of logical and structural patterns. Students read a variety of literature to develop an appreciation of the writer's craft as well as an aesthetic and critical response to literature. The study of literature is organized according to themes that deal with the adolescent and society. 

 

ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS A10 & B10 - PRE-AP 

Prerequisite:  Complete Grade 9 and teacher recommendation

This program covers the outcomes of ELA A10 and B10 while preparing students to be successful in Grade 12 Advance Placement.   Students will work with increasingly complex texts in order to become stronger communicators.  More information on the AP program is available here.

 

ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS 20

Prerequisite:  English A10 & B10

This compulsory English Language Arts course integrates the development of the six strands of communication: speaking, listening, reading, writing, viewing and representing .  Effective communication and thinking skills are developed through a variety of language activities. Students study literature focused on self and society through two themes:  Starting Out and Moving Forward.

 

ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS20 & COMMUNICATION STUDIES 20 - PRE-AP 

Prerequisite:  Complete Grade 10 and teacher recommendation

This program covers the outcomes of ELA 20 and Communication Studies 20 while preparing students to be successful in Grade 12 Advance Placement.   Students will work with increasingly complex texts in order to become stronger communicators.  More information on the AP program is available here.

 

CREATIVE WRITING 20

Prerequisites:  English A10 & B10

The focus is on the exploration and expression of the student’s own ideas. Students refine their writing skills and develop their creative writing abilities. Though the emphasis is on students’ experiences of literary forms and various types of language, they study models of writing from a variety of literary sources. Poetry, fiction and creative non-fiction and drama are explored.

 

MEDIA STUDIES 20

Prerequisites:  English A10 & B10

Approaching media from the context of language and communication, this course helps students better understand mass communication and popular culture. Students explore the impact of mass media, including television, music, magazines, photography, radio, film and video, on the individual and society. Students have an opportunity to read, view, write and discuss critically as they examine the media that influence their lives. They develop an informed and critical understanding of the nature of media, techniques used therein and reflect on the impact of these techniques. Students will also be engaged in a variety of group and individual projects and presentations to demonstrate their ability to use the techniques being studied.

 

ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS  A30

Prerequisite:  English 20

The A30 course is organized around themes that focus on Canadian literature and society.  Assignments and activities are designed to continue development of skills in listening, speaking, representing, reading, and writing.   

 

LEADERSHIP ENGLISH (2 credits)

Earn your ELA 20 credit and a grade 12 elective credit at the same time!  Leadership English is a dual-credit course that gives you the opportunity to earn your required ELA 20 credit and a 30-level credit for Leadership 30L, a locally developed course that focuses on leadership styles, community involvement, and difference-making.  Leadership English is a course for students who want to explore their own identity as a leader, engage in community connections and social action, and understand their social responsibility. 

ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS  B30

Prerequisite:  English 20

The B30 course is an issues-oriented course organized around human concerns in a global society. Students study both traditional and contemporary world literature in a comparative manner to explore themes from a global perspective.
